Southern military district will have to adopt the heavy-duty long-range radar system “Niobium-SV”. About this report “Izvestia” with reference to sources in the Ministry of defence.

New equipment will arrive in troops before the end of 2019. The radar will protect the South of the country and Crimea. Ministry of defence experts have noted that “Niobium-SV” will be the answer to launchers of missile defense systems that the United States will be placed in Romania and Bulgaria. They can be used to run high-precision cruise missiles “Tomahawk”.

In July it became known that the us military completed the deployment in Romania of complex THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense). THAAD was replaced with a permanent system Aegis Ashore, which took place upgrades. Thus the United States fulfill its obligations to protect NATO partners from the EU against air threats.

In early September, the updated Aegis Ashore came back to Romania.

Radar “Niobium-SV” is intended for detection and tracking of aerial objects of all types — aircraft, helicopters, cruise and ballistic missiles, and drones. The radar can track up to 300 targets simultaneously, and its range of detection of air objects is 300 kilometres.
