Tbilisi expects that Russia will cancel the ban on direct flights to Georgia. In an interview with a local television station Imedi said the Minister of economy and sustainable development of Georgia Natia Turnava.
According to her, currently, there is no basis for a ban on flights from the UK. “We need to celebrate our tolerance and hospitality, which contributed to the fact that this whole crisis and rather provocative background we overcame so that there was not the slightest incident which could be used for further provocations,” — said Turnava. The Minister said that to date, there are positive signals, so in Tbilisi expect that the decision will be reviewed.
Turnava also said that Georgia had expected a growth of tourist flow in 2019 20-25 percent, however, due to the June events, the country suffered a shock period. According to her, most affected owners of the small hotel business in Adjara, as well as in major cities across the country. Turnava said that the Georgian authorities were able to respond quickly and to develop a crisis plan involving the provision of financial and logistical assistance to the entrepreneurs.
Earlier, the Minister of foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani said that Georgia wants direct flights to Russia were resumed as soon as possible. According to him, in Tbilisi only welcomes the acceleration of this process since the relationships between Nations, and tourism help de-escalate.
In September the Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergei Lavrov admitted the possibility of restoring air links with Georgia. “This measure will cancel when the situation is normal and when in the Georgian government recognize the necessity for such acts to stop,” said he.
Relations between Russia and Georgia escalated in late June. In Tbilisi has sparked mass protests, which became part of the Russian delegation in the session of the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, during which the Deputy of the state Duma Sergey Gavrilov has occupied the chair of speaker of the Georgian Parliament. After that, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin took a decision to stop direct flights between the countries on 8 July.
