An international group of scientists revealed the mechanism of necrosis that develops during a heart attack and stroke. It turned out that in the absence of oxygen in the blocking arterial blood flow, the synthesis and accumulation of a substance called deoxydihydroceramides and suppressing cellular functions. Desoxypeganine was detected in worms exposed to anoxia, in which oxygen in the body is missing. The concentration of the substance has increased to toxic to cells values. Ceramide inhibits the activity of specific protein complexes and causes defects in the structure of cells and also disrupts mitochondrial function.
The researchers introduced the inhibitor of ceramide synthesis in mice before the animals have caused the heart attack. It turned out that the rodents that received an injection of affected tissue necrosis was 30 percent less compared to the control animals that did not receive inhibitor.
Used in studies of the inhibitor blocked the synthesis of ceramides all, so now scientists are working on getting a more specific drug that will cause fewer side effects.
