To joke about the dispute over the Kuril Islands when discussing the Olympics, not worth it. About it the Russian Embassy in Japan wrote on his page in Facebook.

The Embassy indicated that “sport must unite and not give rise to confrontational jokes”.

Diplomats specially for the Governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike stressed that Japan has a lot of areas where the summer is cooler than in the capital. “But the Russian southern Kuril Islands do not belong to them”, — stated in the message.

October 17, Koike proposed to move to the Kuril Islands marathon and walking race that will take place at the Olympic games-2020. A sarcastic remark she made after proposals to move the competitions in Sapporo because of the summer heat. According to her, in the Northern territories even cooler.

Olympic games in Tokyo will be held from 24 July to 9 August 2020. 25 August — 6 September of the same year Paralympics.

Following the end of world war II between Moscow and Tokyo never signed a peace Treaty. The main obstacle to his signing was the unresolved territorial dispute over the southern Kuril Islands — Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and the Habomai group. The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuril Islands the “Northern territories” and over them does not recognize Russian sovereignty. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the fact of the territorial dispute.
