The world’s most powerful Soviet AN602 thermonuclear (“Tsar bomb” or “gruel”) was useless, says La Vanguardia.
The Spanish newspaper writes that the use in a real war weapon, possessed of impressive dimensions, was hampered by the necessity of transport over long distances. Another disadvantage AN602 called that when it explodes, most of the energy went into space.
According to La Vanguardia, the Soviet Union, creating such a weapon, was trying to intimidate Western countries and to hide behind them in technology. The publication concludes that AN602 was “impressive bluff”.
In October, Rosatom has declassified material relating to German experts who took part in the creation of the Soviet nuclear weapons.
The explosion of 50-megaton thermonuclear bomb AN602 was held in October 1961 at an altitude of about 3900 meters above sea level on the New Earth. The weapon is the most powerful ever experienced by man.
