The recognition of the Crimea part of Russia will help the US to improve relations between the two countries. This was stated by a former employee of the American foreign service Dennis Rotblat in his article published by National Interest.
The former diplomat stressed that the majority of the population of Crimea always was Russian, and the inhabitants of the Peninsula “identify with the historical struggle of Russia against invasion from the West.” He also notes that the US has tried to use the policy of sanctions against Russia before, but she did not bring the desired result.
In addition, to restore relations Nordblad offers student exchanges between countries and to reduce the nuclear threat and to reconsider the role of NATO. “In the long term it will benefit, which will not bring our sanctions,” — he concluded.
Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after a referendum in which the majority of respondents supported this idea. Kiev and the West believe that Russia occupied the Ukrainian territory. Moscow denies these accusations and insists that the vote was in accordance with international law.
