Washington said that the reason for the termination of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty) was not 9М729 cruise missile complex “Iskander-M”, and some other weapons. This was stated by Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Ryabkov, reports “Kommersant”.
“What they had in mind, we absolutely do not understand, and they refuse to explain it,” said Ryabkov, adding that the U.S. side did not provide any additional details about this.
The Deputy Minister also stressed that 9М729 does not apply to missiles of medium and shorter-range missiles. In his opinion, the United States decided to terminate the agreement, as it limited their opportunities.
It is noted that in January the Russian side briefed the foreign experts, which talked about some of the characteristics of the rocket. The US has ignored the event, calling it “imitation and propaganda”. The publication suggests that, in putting forward the new charges, the us was referring to fraud on the part of Russia.
The effect of missile INF Treaty was formally closed on 2 August. Washington broke the agreement, allegedly due to violations of its terms by the Russian side. Moscow has indicated unsubstantiated nature of the allegations and complained about the reluctance of the US to enter the dialogue.
The INF Treaty signed by Moscow and Washington in December 1987. The agreement forbade the USSR and the USA to produce, test and deploy ballistic and cruise land-based missiles of medium (1,000 to 5,500 kilometers) and small (from 500 to 1000 km) range, and was obliged to liquidate the appropriate launcher.
