One of the most important components of perestroika in the Soviet Union was the new foreign policy thinking. In an interview with German magazine Spiegel said the former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev.
He noted that he had no regrets about the restructuring, because at that time it was impossible to live as before. “And a significant part of the restructuring was the new foreign policy thinking, which covers both universal values and nuclear disarmament, and freedom of choice,” — said the politician.
Gorbachev also said that the country’s leadership was unanimous about the need for change, despite the risks. He also said that those responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union: in his opinion, the organizers of the August coup, and those who used the weakened position of the President. “You can argue about how far we have come on the road to true democracy, but we do not return to a totalitarian system,” — said the former President.
In October, a quarter of Russians polled by VTSIOM, called themselves victims of restructuring. Most of them older than 60 years. In addition, 40 percent of respondents said that as a result of restructuring in Russia worsened the confusion and chaos in the government, another 30 percent pointed to the deepening economic crisis.
Perestroika, accompanied by a number of reforms that lasted from 1985 to 1991. The term was first used by Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986, during a visit to Togliatti. Ended restructuring liquidation of the CPSU and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
