MP from the party “Alternative for Germany” Anton Friesen said in an interview with RIA Novosti, Crimea will remain Russian region.
Friesen called it “the real situation”. In his opinion, anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United States, will not change the affiliation of the Peninsula.
The German MP noted that the European Union is not necessary to recognize Russia’s sovereignty over Crimea in order to develop economic and humanitarian cooperation with this region. He explained that the EU had a similar strategy to interact with the unrecognized South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the so — called participation without recognition.
Friesen was the author of the initiative about removal of anti-Russian sanctions and the Declaration policy of cooperation, not confrontation with Russia. On 24 October, the Bundestag rejected this proposal.
The first sanctions against Moscow was introduced in 2014 after joining the Crimea to Russia. Kiev, the US and several Western countries considered the annexation of Crimea illegal. Economic impact of the measures has been repeatedly extended. In response, Moscow imposed a ban on food imports from countries that supported sanctions.
