The Minister of foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei said that the Republic does not want to repeat the mistakes of Ukraine in seeking to converge with the EU. He told this in an interview with German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which is published on the MFA website.
“The situation in Ukraine today for us is a negative example. This, in my opinion, there is also the fault of the EU, which in the past tried as quickly as possible to bind the Ukraine”, — he stressed.
However, Belarus is not planning to rely solely on Russia, as during the financial crisis of 2008, the Belarusian “had learned from his own experience that dependence on one country is detrimental to the economy.”
In July this year the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko urged the EU to strengthen bilateral relations. The Belarusian leader stated that in recent years joint projects of Belarus and the EU are developing the most effectively, and thanked the European institutions for investment assistance to the country. “This is not only Belarusians, but also the Europeans”, concluded the head of the Republic.
