Researchers have simulated exoplanets that are similar to Earth and located in binary systems. It turned out that in 87 percent of cases, the planets have a steady axis of rotation, which contributes to a stable climate and the development of complex life. Since 50 percent of stars are binaries, the scientific results applicable to a large number of planetary systems, making the appearance of alien organisms is more likely than previously thought.
According to scientists, small changes in the axis of the Earth has made the planet inhabitable, whereas the atmosphere of Mars could be destroyed by significant deviations in the angle of inclination.
The researchers found that in a binary system of alpha and Beta Centauri, the planet’s axis fluctuated too much, which greatly reduces the probability of the existence on it of a habitable environment.
The tilt of earth’s axis from precessive of 22.1 to 24.5 degrees over 41 thousand years. One of the factors of its stability is the Moon, in the absence of which the gravity of nearby planets destabilizie the angle of rotation. The slope might change at 60 degrees, which would make the Earth like Mars.
