The Parliament of Lithuania should abandon the consideration of a law that frees the people of Lithuania the responsibility for the mass extermination of Jews during the Second world war, said the President of the Council of European rabbis chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt.
“This is a direct insult to hundreds of thousands of Lithuanian Jews, the murders which promoted and incited Lithuanian political and military leaders as well as local Lithuanian population,” the statement says Goldschmidt. There he called upon the Lithuanian authorities to “acknowledge its history and not try to ignore or deny it.”
He also pointed out that during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania by the local population and Lithuanian battalions were involved in the murder of more than 90 percent of those killed in the country 220 thousand Jews. “The rewriting of history for political gain is unacceptable,” — said the Rabbi.
In December it became known that in the Lithuanian Seimas are preparing a law that at the state level will be recognized that the Lithuanians did not participate in the crimes of the Holocaust and do not bear responsibility because they were enslaved.
Such a law for several months 2018 acted in Poland. It’s been suggested criminal liability for the charges in the poles of collaborating with the Nazis.
