On the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan was a shootout, reports News.am
According to the newspaper, the incident occurred on January 11 in Tavush region. The Armenian defense Ministry accused Azerbaijan’s armed forces in the wound of a soldier with a sniper shot. “All responsibility for further action rests with the Azerbaijani side”, — said the press Secretary of the Armenian defense Minister Artsrun Hovhannisyan.
Writes Haqqin.az, Tavush region borders the Gazakh region of Azerbaijan. Baku argues that in recent days the Armenian armed forces fired from heavy and sniper weapons, border military positions and military vehicles to Azerbaijan. The shelling was suppressed by return fire, said a state border service.
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, populated mostly by ethnic Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to bring the region under their control by force. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic with the mediation of Russia signed a Protocol on ceasefire, but the hostilities are periodically renewed. The most serious deterioration has become a four-day war in 2016, which killed hundreds of soldiers on both sides.
