The CPS told us how to reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This is stated on the Agency’s website.

Experts say that exercise helps to reduce the risk of an incurable brain disease and other types of dementia by 50 percent, and help to slow the development of incipient disease. Exercise stimulates the brain to maintain old neural pathways and create new ones, and increase the number of protective neurotransmitters. “One of the three cases of Alzheimer’s can be prevented through lifestyle changes,” say the experts.

Into rospotrebnazdore indicated that people aged 65 and over should pay at least 150 minutes a week exercise of moderate intensity, or 75 minutes a week aerobic classes with high intensity. Each activity must last for at least 10 minutes.

In addition to protecting the brain, exercise helps older people to restore sleep and reduce anxiety, said the Agency.

On 31 December it was reported that scientists at the Institute of molecular medicine and the University of California, Irvine have developed a vaccine against amyloid plaques from Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Experiments on mice were successful, and experts plan to soon begin clinical trials of the drug involving human subjects.

Prior to this, scientists of the Salk Institute in the US discovered a potential drug against senile dementia and Alzheimer’s disease J147 CMS121 and that can slow aging in healthy mice, blocking the damage to brain cells.

According to the world health organization (who), currently there are about 50 million people with dementia, and every year there is almost 10 million new cases of the disease. The most common cause of dementia is the Alzheimer’s disease, which accounts for 60-70 percent of all cases. Currently, the share of the population with dementia aged 60 years and older at any time is 5 to 8 percent. By 2050, the world may already be 152 million elderly with dementia.

The most popular hypothesis for the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease is the appearance of extracellular deposits of the neurotoxic beta-amyloid in the brain. Effective therapies, reliable biomarkers or preventative strategies is still unknown.
