NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has promised to respond to the deployment of Russian missile complexes “Iskander-M” with cruise missiles 9М729 Novator complex defensive measures. About it reports Deutsche Welle.
“What about the missiles 9М729, we are going to work on air and missile defense systems over conventional weapons, on strengthening of combat readiness and rapid alarm in case of starts”, — said the NATO Secretary General about the response to Russia’s actions. He added that the Alliance still considers the accommodation 9М729 a violation of the terms of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range.
The effect of missile INF Treaty was formally closed on 2 August. Washington broke the agreement, allegedly due to violations of its terms by the Russian side. Moscow has indicated unsubstantiated nature of the allegations and complained about the reluctance of the US to enter the dialogue.
The INF Treaty signed by Moscow and Washington in December 1987. The agreement forbade the USSR and the USA to produce, test and deploy ballistic and cruise land-based missiles of medium (1,000 to 5,500 kilometers) and small (from 500 to 1000 km) range, and was obliged to liquidate the appropriate launcher.
