According to the American media, GRU started the cyber-phishing campaign against Burisma in November 2019. It is assumed that the hackers were looking for potentially incriminating materials about the son of Joe Biden, one of the participants of the presidential race in the United States.
It is noted that has been hacked not only the server itself Burisma Holdings, and its subsidiaries and partners. The Washington Post emphasizes that it is unknown as to which servers of the Russian spies managed to gain access.
Previously, experts of the American company in the computer security Area 1 Security recorded attacks by Russian hackers on the servers of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. American media claim that the attack was organized by Russian hackers.
According to Area 1 Security, the attack resembles the hacking of the servers of the national Committee of the US Democratic party in 2016. The blame for this hacking experts put on Russia and private hackers, known as the Fancy Bear. Moscow denies all the charges.
In September the house of representatives of the United States Congress began impeachment proceedings against U.S. President Donald trump. The occasion was his phone conversation with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, the contents of which were reported by the informant. Members of the Democratic party want to prove that the US President put pressure on the Ukrainian colleague that he stimulated the investigation of corruption case against the son of Joe Biden, who is considered the most promising opponent of the trump in the election in 2020.
