Japanese astronomers revealed the nature of the mysterious cosmic body, which flew over Kyoto (Japan) on 29 April 2017. Researchers believe that the object may be a fragment of near-earth asteroid 2003 YT1. About it reported in a press release on Phys.org.
The scientists found that the asteroid had rotational instability under the effect of Yarkovsky-O ‘ Keefe-the Radzievskiy-of Padaca (YORP-effect). The latter is reflected in change of speed of a small celestial body under the action of sunlight. This can lead to a rotational movement and to reduce the strength of the asteroid. The result is a celestial body is split, releasing dust and numerous fragments that hit the Earth’s atmosphere.
2003 YT1 may create potentially dangerous for the planet fragments that will hit Earth within the next 10 million years. Currently, however, the asteroid poses no threat because it does not show any activity. Chip, burned over Japan, were also not dangerous, as reached in diameter of only few centimeters.
