Verkhovna Rada deputies voted for the adoption of a resolution on the return of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). This was stated by MP from the party “servant of the people” Elizabeth Jasko on his page in Facebook.
“We’re going to Strasbourg to fight for Ukraine. Thank you to everyone who supported parliamentary diplomacy,” wrote the MP. The Ukrainian delegation will take part in the next PACE session, which will begin on January 27.
In September 2019 Ukraine has officially refused to participate in the PACE autumn session. The reason for this decision was the return to the Assembly of parliamentarians from Russia.
Before that, PACE adopted a resolution that restored Russia to the powers of the Assembly in full. The decision caused protest from the delegations of Ukraine, Georgia, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The Ukrainian delegation, in particular, has declared its intention to leave the organization and left the meeting room.
Russia was deprived of the basic powers of the PACE in April 2014 due to the reunification of the Crimea and armed conflict in the Donbass. In 2017 Moscow, which is the biggest contributor of Assembly has frozen the payment of membership dues and announced that will resume payments only after full recovery of its powers in the organization.
