Representatives of the clubs of the Russian Premier League (RPL) voted to increase the number of participants in the elite division. About it reports “R-Sport”.
According to the head of the HRC Sergey Pryadkin, the majority of clubs were in favour of expanding the League to 18 teams. The functionary said that while there is no clarity on when it will be adopted this version of the tournament. He stressed that the League there were those who opposed the innovations.
Reform of the Russian championship under discussion since the summer of 2019. In particular, in June the President of CSKA Evgenie Giner has proposed to add to the elite division clubs of the leading CIS championship. He took Kazakhstan “Kairat”, “Astana” or “Dinamo”.
Since 1994 the championship of Russia are 16 clubs (exceptions were only seasons of 1996 and 1997 where there were 18 teams). The number of participating teams has not changed and with the formation of the Premier League in 2001. However, the first national championship was distinguished by the number of teams. So, in 1992 for the title of champion of Russia struggled for 20 clubs. In 1993, the number of participants was reduced to 18.
