The head of the Libyan national army (LNA) – Khalifa Haftar, the leader of the national consensus government (NTC) Faiz Sarraj are not yet ready to conclude a peace Treaty. This was stated by acting Minister of foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov on a press-conference at the end of 2019. Video stream available on the page of the office Facebook.
Lavrov stressed that as long as the sides are very tense relationship. “The main thing now is that after the Berlin conference (…) the Libyan side did not repeat their past mistakes and started to put forward additional conditions, blaming each other,” the diplomat said.
According to Lavrov, the Haftarot and Sarraj don’t even want to be with each other in the same room. He stressed that despite this, the outcome documents of the Berlin conference on Libya almost agreed.
14 Jan Haftar left Moscow, did not sign a ceasefire agreement with Sarraj. This meeting took place on the eve of the Berlin conference on the situation in Libya. In addition to the heads of the LNA and the NTC it will join the U.S., Russia, Britain, France, China, Turkey, Italy and the United Nations.
On 8 January the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the Libyan conflict to a truce and offered to sit at the negotiating table. Libyan field Marshal Khalifa Haftar first refused the offer of the Russian and Turkish leaders decided to continue the offensive on Tripoli. But then the LDF announced the ceasefire in the Western region of Libya from midnight on January 12.
