Scientists at Yale University in the US have come to the conclusion that one of the main causes of sudden heart attack is the effect ultramatic particles frequently occurring in polluted air. About it reported in a press release on MedicalXpress.
The researchers analyzed data on non-fatal cases of myocardial infarction in Augsburg (Germany) among 5 898 patients. At the same time heart attacks were compared with the values of air pollution taking into account such additional factors as the day of the week and socioeconomic status.
It turned out that in the first few hours of impact on the body particles can cause malfunction of the heart. Because of their small size they can easily penetrate into the blood and into the cells.
Myocardial infarction is the most common form of cardiovascular disease worldwide. Ultramercial particles reach the size of 100 nanometers or less. The major source is auto exhaust.
