Scientists from Denmark and the Netherlands predicted that in the future there will be a city of giant mushrooms. The mycelium will fit for the construction of the “mushroom” building, able to grow and repair itself. This publication reports Science Alert.
Researchers believe that living material will make the construction less dependent on fossil fuels and mining, which has a strong impact on the environment and climate. To ensure its durability will be required to cover its special composition, however, the biological activity of the tissues must be preserved. Then when you add water to activate the growth of fungus if the building will need repairing.
Coverage can also be useful to work with internal structures of fungal tissue to hold the wiring or plumbing facilities. Mains can also be made from biologically active tissues. However, while these ideas are speculative, and scientists still don’t know how it could be implemented.
