Former President of Latvia Andris Berzins criticized the attitude to the Russian language in the country. His words leads Neatkarīgā Rīta.
He said that none of the state do not struggle with languages. According to him, Latvia should use all the languages spoken by the population. “Neither a nation nor language are not enemies. You can argue about the system, but not for the people,” — said the politician.
Berzins also said that Latvia there is a problem in education, and as a result students know English better Latvian.
Earlier Latvia has refused to hold a referendum on education in the Russian language. Signatures wanted to put together a batch of “New consent”. Under the new law of the country in the schools of national minorities, the majority of subjects must be taught in Latvian — Russian remains only on the lessons of Russian language and literature, as well as “items associated with culture and history.” Finally, the reform will come into effect from September 1, 2021.
