A sharp decline in demand for mayonnaise in Russia occurred because of the commitment of the Russians from large cities to a healthy lifestyle, and because falling incomes among residents of regions of the country. This is explained by the growing discontent and an increase in protest activity of Russians, one of the instruments of struggle with which was a change of government, says the correspondent of the Helsingin Sanomat, Jussi Namalayan (Jussi Niemeläinen).
According to Finnish journalist, in Russia the role of the mayonnaise on the Christmas table is equivalent to the role of ketchup Finns for the Christmas ham. However, Nielsine notes that the drop in sales of mayonnaise was not a big surprise. This is, firstly, due to propaganda of healthy way of life with parties and decline of trust in manufacturers.
Second, in some regions of the country mayonnaise could stop buying because it “simply no money”, said the journalist. “So, the growing discontent is nothing new. Explain the universal irritability and frequent rallies. At the same time, the Russians have less to support state leaders,” writes Namalayan.
In conclusion, the journalist notes that the change of government in Russia that took place on 15 January, can be regarded as an attempt to increase the confidence of people in the country to power. “Amendments to the Constitution and changes in the government soon drew attention from the problems of the use of mayonnaise in the country,” — emphasizes Namalayan.
