Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the presidential party “servant of the people” Oleksandr Merezhko became the Vice-President of the parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). This was announced by MP Evgeny Kravchuk on his page in Facebook.

“The Vice President is extremely important, for he may, if necessary, replace the President and to preside over the meeting of the Assembly or the debate (if you do not accept in them participation as a speaker)”, — wrote the MP from the party of President Vladimir Zelensky. She noted that Merezhko will automatically be included in the composition of the Bureau, which prepares the agenda for sessions of the Assembly.

17 Jan Merezhko was also the head Committee on foreign Affairs and inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Earlier in January, the Ukrainian Parliament voted for the adoption of the resolution on return of the delegation of Ukraine in PACE after the official refusal from participation in the autumn session of the organization. The reason for the decision taken in September 2019, was the return to the Assembly of parliamentarians from Russia.

Before that, PACE adopted a resolution that restored Russia to the powers of the Assembly in full. The decision caused protest from the delegations of Ukraine, Georgia, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The Ukrainian delegation, in particular, has declared its intention to leave the organization and left the meeting room.

Russia was deprived of the basic powers of the PACE in April 2014 due to the reunification of the Crimea and armed conflict in the Donbass. In 2017 Moscow, which is the biggest contributor of Assembly has frozen the payment of membership dues and announced that will resume payments only after full recovery of its powers in the organization.
