Finnish astronomers have discovered an unknown type of Aurora called “dunes”. In form it is a luminous waves and do not fit any of the existing categories of atmospheric glow. This publication reports Science Alert.
Radiance, which was recorded seven times, arise to the height of about a hundred kilometers in the upper part of the mesosphere, visible at the same time from different places in Finland and Sweden. They are an example of what is called “mesospheric channel”, and occur when the oxygen atoms, the distribution of which depends on the influence of atmospheric waves excited in the interaction with the solar wind.
In 2017, it was reported another new species of atmospheric phenomena is “Steve”. The phenomenon was first noticed by enthusiasts from the organization by the Alberta Aurora Chasers who are engaged in observations of the Aurora. They found a relatively narrow ribbon of green and purple lights, differing from the known species of the Aurora Borealis. “Steve” is not the Aurora, in its formation are other mechanisms.
