Scientists at the Sanger Institute and University College London in the UK called a simple way to protect against cancer. They proved that quitting Smoking enhances protect the body from lung tumors. About it reported in a press release on EurekAlert!.
The researchers analyzed the results of lung biopsy in 16 patients, including smokers, former smokers, never smokers and children. Was reconstructed nucleotide sequence of the DNA 632 individual cells and identified genetic differences.
It turned out that, although the cells were not malignant, in 9 of the 10 cells of smokers revealed up to 10 thousand additional mutations compared to non-smokers. These changes were directly caused by exposure to chemical substances in tobacco smoke. More than a quarter of the damaged cells had at least one mutation that contribute to cancer. This explains why the risk of disease in malignant tumors is much higher than in non-smokers.
However, those who quit Smoking had four times as many healthy cells. This refutes the myth that after a long experience of Smoking to quit the habit does not make sense. However, Smoking also causes irreversible damage that leads to emphysema.
