The United States wanted to discuss nuclear arms reductions with Russia and China said Wednesday, February 12, assistant of the us leader’s national security, Robert O’brien, RIA Novosti reported.
According to him, the United States looks forward to a serious discussion of cuts in nuclear stockpiles with Russia and China. O’brien recalled that the us withdrew from “ineffective” to the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty). Also, according to him, the President of the United States Donald trump invested in the Ministry of defence. All this, according to the assistant to the national security, could lead Russia and China to the negotiating table.
Earlier in February, the Director of the Department of the Russian foreign Ministry on issues of nonproliferation and arms control Vladimir Yermakov said that Russia and USA have exhausted the possibilities for further nuclear disarmament. Ermakov added that further steps will require the involvement of Britain and France because they have nuclear weapons and are military allies of the American side.
Last year, Washington unilaterally withdrew from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate and shorter-range missiles (INF Treaty). Moscow was accused of non-compliance. The Russian side has rejected all charges and has also suspended participation in the Treaty. Later in the United States was named another reason is a rapidly developing missile program of China. The agreement was officially terminated on 2 August 2019.
According to the contract signed between the USSR and the USA in 1987 INF Treaty that prohibited the production and testing of cruise and ballistic missiles with ranges from 500 to 5.5 thousand kilometers.
