The prohibition in the Constitution on the alienation of Russian territory will put an end to the issue of the Kuril Islands, said the Governor of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko. His words are on the website of the regional government Friday, February 14.
“A few days ago I returned from a working trip to the Islands of Kunashir and Shikotan, and I can say: the opinion of the residents has not changed. The residents of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands kurilchanami think the Russian land,” — he said.
President Vladimir Putin on the eve supported the proposal to amend the basis of law the prohibition on alienation of Russian territory. He added that this initiative of the actor Vladimir Mashkov should perform lawyers.
The constitutional changes, the Russian leader announced in mid-January. Then he said that all the initiatives will be submitted to a popular vote.
At the end of the Second world war between Moscow and Tokyo never signed a peace Treaty, as Japan considers the South Kurile Islands the “Northern territories” and does not recognize Russian sovereignty over them. Moscow does not consider it a topic for discussion.
