The European Union urged Israel to reconsider plans to build settlements in the Palestinian territories, which, in the opinion of the European side, are detrimental to the middle East. This is stated in the statement of the EU high representative for foreign and security policy, Josep Borrell, the content of which is quoted by RIA Novosti.
In the areas of Givat Matos and har Homa in East Jerusalem, Israel intends to build several thousand housing units. In EU consider that the construction of settlements violates the geographical unity of the Palestinian territory between Jerusalem and Bethlehem and isolates the communities living in Palestine.
In the European Union also recalled that, in accordance with international law, settlements are illegal and the EU will not recognize any changes to borders pre-1967, unless it is the result of an agreement the two parties to the conflict.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that in the area of har Homa in East Jerusalem Israel will build a 2.2 thousand additional housing units and approximately 4 million housing units in the Givat Matos.
