Russia will respond to U.S. nuclear strike in case of attacks, their ballistic missile submarines. The corresponding condition on the briefing call, the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, reports “Interfax”.
“Any attack with the use of the American ballistic missile submarines (SLBM), regardless of the characteristics of its equipment, would be perceived as an attack involving nuclear weapons,” she said, commenting on the publication on the website of the U.S. Department of state on issues of creation of nuclear warheads of low power and equipping them some SLBMs.
Zakharova, referring to the Military doctrine of Russia, said that a similar attack will be considered grounds for retaliatory use of nuclear weapons from Moscow. According to her, the United States is deliberately blurring the lines between non-strategic and strategic nuclear weapons, which inevitably leads to a lowering of the nuclear threshold.
In February 2021 expires the Treaty on the limitation of strategic offensive arms (start I), signed in 2010 by then presidents of Russia and the USA Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama. According to the document, the Russian and American sides during the seven years pledge to reduce the number of deployed strategic delivery vehicles — Intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missile submarines, and heavy bombers — to 700 units.
Washington insists that the new agreement should include more parties and “cover more systems than now.” In addition, according to the American authorities, it should include a range of new Russian weapons systems that are currently being developed.
