Chinese scientists have discovered why men suffer heavier COVID-19 than women. The study is published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health.
The doctors analyzed 1019 cases of infection with coronavirus new type, assessing the severity of disease and number of deaths. It was found that under similar conditions, including about the same age of patients and presence of chronic diseases, men died 2.4 times more often than women. In the studied group male mortality was 70.3% versus 29.7% of women.
Also, the experts analyzed the cases of SARS in China in 2003 and noticed the overwhelming number of male deaths. In the study, experts have called the main, in their opinion, the cause of high mortality among men: lung cells of males contain more molecules of the receptor ACE2, which plays a key role in the infection like SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. While both sexes approximately equally often catch COVID-19.
Experts from China concluded that conducted the first such study in the scientific community, which explains the role of gender in diseases of coronavirus. Experts said that their results need to check additional clinical trials.
Earlier, Australian scientists have discovered why men are more likely to die from mers than women. In their opinion, the high male mortality due to the combination of several factors, including genes, hormones, features of the immune system and behavior. Additional causes are also chronic diseases that are more common in men.
