Scientists of the research Institute of Harvard and the Harvard school of engineering and applied Sciences John Paulson have found a method of treatment of incurable cancer, resistant to immune system. For this purpose they developed a tool that makes the cells of the macrophages to fight cancer. The authors, who published in the journal Science Advances.
The authors have constructed a particle they called “the backpack.” It is associated with the surface of macrophages and regulate their phenotype, keeping in a state of struggle with malignant cells. “Backpacks” avoid absorption by the cell (phagocytosis) in a few days and continuously produce cytokines — signaling molecules that activate anti-tumor effect of macrophages. This method showed efficiency even in tissues of breast cancer, where the immune system is strongly suppressed.
Macrophages perform the capture and destruction of these potential threats to the body as viruses, bacteria and cancer cells. However, malignant cells are able to release substances that trigger macrophages to a state that is conducive to the growth of the tumor. They suppress the immune system and stimulate the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumor with nutrients and provide its further metastasis.
