The development of the “Antonov” of the heavy-lifting aircraft in the world, Soviet (Ukrainian) Antonov An-255 “Mriya” was originally explained by the need to transport components of the Soviet reusable space transportation system “Energia” — “Buran”, writes in the American magazine Popular Mechanics columnist Anatoly Zak.
The specialist said that the main role in creating the aircraft played Ukrainian designers Anatoly vovnyanko and Peter balabuev.
“During his public debut of the An-225 was called “Mriya”, which in Ukrainian means “dream”. It was the first case when the Soviet aircraft was a Ukrainian name that reflects the ongoing liberalization of Soviet society under the leadership of Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev and his wife Raisa personally saw a magnificent machine,” says Zach.
In April An-255 “Mriya” set a world record for the volume carried in the cargo compartment of the aircraft cargo.
In March, the aircraft first flew after 18-month renovation.
Current An-255 “Mriya” exists in a single copy. The first aircraft took to the air in December 1988. Now utrema An-255 “Mriya” is the most lifting aircraft in the world. Among the aircraft of its size it is second only to the American Stratolaunch, first flying in April 2019.
