The number of applications for asylum in the EU almost halved because of the epidemic coronavirus infection. This is evidenced by the data on the website of the European support office in the area of asylum (the European Asylum Support Office, EASO).
In March, petitions were less than 43 per cent compared to the previous month. It is about 34.7 per thousand statements.
EASO noted that these data do not speak about the decline in the number of the asylum seekers in the European Union. According to experts, the reduction only reflects the measures taken to combat the spread of coronavirus.
