Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of bellicose rhetoric and promised to protect Nagorno-Karabakh by any means. On Thursday, may 21, according to “Sputnik Armenia”.
Press Secretary of the Armenian foreign Minister Anna Naghdalyan said that the statements of Baku on the election in Karabakh detrimental to peaceful settlement of the conflict. The threat of war and bellicose rhetoric are a traditional and integral part of Azerbaijan’s destructive position, but this will not affect the democratic processes in Karabakh, said Hermine Naghdalyan. According to her, Armenia will continue to cooperate closely with the democratic Nagorno-Karabakh authorities and to defend the right of people to self-determination.
May 21 will be the inauguration of the newly elected head of the Nagorno-Karabakh Arayik Harutyunyan. Baku said that the elections are contrary to international law, and Azerbaijan reserves the right “to ensure its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders with all necessary means.”
In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh, populated mainly by Armenians, declared independence from Azerbaijan. Baku tried to bring the region under their control by force. In 1994, Azerbaijan, Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic with the mediation of Russia signed a Protocol on ceasefire, but the hostilities are periodically renewed.
