The contribution of northerners in Russia’s GDP amounted to almost 10 percent

The activities of the inhabitants of the Arctic gives almost a tenth of Russia’s GDP. It’s found in the mediaofis national census on the basis of data of Rosstat, reports RIA Novosti.

The experts noted that 2.4 million northerners (1.5 percent of the total population) make a huge contribution to the Russian economy due to its creativity, efficiency and independence. Also, the region is home to hundreds of oil, gas, coal, diamonds and various ores.

Director of the Institute of regional problems Dmitry Zhuravlev pointed out that the importance of the Arctic region is difficult to overestimate. “The global crisis has somewhat overshadowed the importance of this topic, but to invest in long-term projects for the development of resources in the Russian Arctic need right now, otherwise you will be late,” he added.

Earlier it was reported that as a result of a possible merger of the Nenets Autonomous district and Arkhangelsk region will be a further development of the Arctic projects that will make a new region advanced megaregion.
