The Ukrainian government in 2014, she provided an opportunity for the Crimea to join Russia. This was stated by Russian permanent representative to the UN Vassily Nebenzia at the meeting of the security Council Arria formula, RIA Novosti reported.
According to him, the actions of Kiev resulted in the Crimea held a referendum on joining Russia. “Unfortunately, Ukrainians have nobody to blame but themselves, because they opened the path to this referendum in 2014,” — said Nebenzia.
He recalled that the guarantors of the agreement, which was signed by the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition, were the foreign Ministers of Germany, France and Poland. The following day, however, these guarantees have been violated by the opposition that seized power, in connection with which the Ukrainian leader had to flee because his life was in danger. “If that hadn’t happened in Kiev in 2014, the situation would have been different and the Crimea today would have been where he was until 2014,” — said Russia’s permanent representative to the UN.
Crimea became part of Russia in 2014, after a referendum in which the majority of respondents supported this decision. In the same year, the United States, European Union and some other countries have introduced sanctions against Russia due to the annexation of the Peninsula. Kiev considers the territory annexed and accuses Moscow of violating the rights of the Crimean Tatars. Russian authorities deny these accusations.
