Ukraine has filed a claim in international arbitration against Russia over the Kerch incident

Ukraine has filed an international arbitration suit against Russia because of the incident in the Kerch Strait for the purpose of receiving compensation. It is reported TASS with reference to the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Clarifies that the requirements of the Ukrainian side concern the detention by Russian border guards warships and their crews in November 2018.

27 Jan FSB of Russia has suspended investigation of criminal case against Ukrainian sailors detained as a result of attempts of illegal crossing of the Russian border in the Kerch Strait.

Two boats of naval forces of Ukraine “Berdyansk” and “Nikopol” and the tug “Yana Kapu” was returned to Kyiv on 18 November 2019. After that, the Ukrainian side has accused Russia that the ships are in terrible condition with missing bowls and small items like the interior ceiling. Meanwhile in FSB of Russia has refuted these claims and showed a video on Board the ships, which shows that even personal belongings were returned intact.

On 25 may 2019, the international UN Tribunal for the law of the sea ordered Russia to return to Ukraine the arrested ships. The Russian side insisted that the investigation of the incident lies in the field of criminal law and is not within the competence of the Tribunal. The military court, as well as 24 sailors were detained by Russian border guards on 25 November 2018. The soldiers returned to Kiev in the course of the exchange of detained and captured individuals in September 2019.
