Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on distance voting in elections. The document on Saturday, may 23, published on the official portal of legal information.
The new rule allows using mail and electronic voting on elections of all levels, as well as in referendums. In addition, it is allowed to collect signatures of voters via the portal of public services. The law also gives the possibility to postpone the election of regional heads in case of introduction of state of emergency.
Earlier, the Secretary of the Central election Commission of Russia (CEC) Maya Grishina said that remote voting is needed to ensure that voters could sign regardless of the situation. So, it can resort if other forms impossible. It will also allow to vote for those who can’t make it in person due to health risks.
The law on remote voting was passed by the Parliament on 13 may. A week later it was approved by the Federation Council.
