The Federation Council member Alexei Pushkov told about the danger of flirting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko with the West. About it reports “Ukraine.ru”.
According to the Senator, the “game” of the American side in the post-Soviet space is to bring to power the best to her. He recalled the fate of the ex-President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze and former Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovych. “That Shevardnadze, how much it is in Georgia has been flexible with the Americans, but even replaced it, brought to power [Mikhail] Saakashvili through a coup,” — said the politician.
Pushkov also said that the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych tried to be a good partner for the Western States, however, the leaders of these countries spoke in support of the Maidan. The Senator also added that the foreign Ministers of Poland, France and Germany were given written guarantees to Yanukovych that he will be able to conclude a truce with the opposition, and after a few months will be new elections, but the next day these guarantees “thrown in the trash”.
According to Pushkov, the purpose of the policy of Western countries is to change the system in Belarus, and not in the development of relations without internal modifications. “For starters we can talk about financial assistance on expanding economic cooperation, but there is a political subtext,” added Pushkov. He expressed confidence that Lukashenko understands this.
Earlier, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin considers the development of relations between Belarus and the United States their sovereign right, but their “ultrafast convergence” is unlikely.
In February, during a visit to Belarus, the US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo, said the possibility of lifting sanctions, and also about the willingness to provide the Republic with oil at competitive prices. He also noted significant progress in the situation of human rights in the country. In turn, Alexander Lukashenko said Pompeo “one of the architects of modern policy”.
