UN Secretary-General antónio Guterres welcomed the announced three-day truce with the Taliban in Afghanistan. This was announced by his spokesman Stefan Dyuzharrik, reports RIA Novosti.
“The Secretary-General welcomes the announcement by the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban (banned in Russia the movement — approx. “Of the tape.ru”) the cease-fire, which will make possible peaceful celebration of Eid al-Fitr,” said Dujarric.
According to him, the Secretary General calls on all concerned to seize this opportunity to join the peace process. “Only a negotiated settlement can end the suffering in Afghanistan. The UN is committed to supporting the people and government of Afghanistan in this important endeavour”, he concluded.
Earlier, the Taliban announced the ceasefire in Afghanistan for three days on the occasion of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr (Uraza-Bayram). Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has ordered the security forces to observe a truce during this time.
10 Mar Ashraf Ghani signed a decree to pardon Taliban prisoners and their release. So he reacted to the signing by the USA and the Taliban for peace in a ceremony in Doha, Qatar, the 29 Feb.
The Taliban was formed in 1994 in the midst of civil war in Afghanistan. In 1996-2001 the Taliban were in power in the country, and after the overthrow in 2001, began a guerrilla war with government troops and NATO forces in Afghanistan and Pakistan. U.S. troops entered Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001.
