The Russian government until October 1, 2020 banned the importation of fuel from abroad, thus depriving citizens of cheap gasoline. This follows from the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers published on the official portal of legal information.
Under the ban, in particular, got gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and marine fuel. According to the decree, restrictions were imposed to ensure Russia’s energy security and stabilize the situation on the domestic market.
Earlier it was reported that Russia since the beginning of the spring of 2020 began buying gasoline in Belarus, as the delivery costs for 500 rubles cheaper per ton than Russian. The same thing happened with diesel fuel, thousand tons of which came in the spring from China and South Korea. According to market participants, the imported fuel is much cheaper than the Russian counterpart.
The reason for this was the fall in oil prices on the background of the coronavirus and overproduction in the spring of 2020. After oil in the world has declined and the cost of petroleum products. However, in the Russian territory such a natural reduction is impossible because of the damping mechanism. According to him, when the world price of oil is high, oil companies receive compensation for the supply of cheap gasoline to the domestic market. When oil drops below a set level, companies themselves should contribute to the budget extra funds.
