Muslim Raffia Arshad became the first woman in hijab as a judge in the UK. About it reports The Independent.

40-year-old woman for over 17 years legal practice. She believes that her example is very important to other Muslim women: according to her, from an early age she was told that she will not be able to achieve success in the profession because of its origin. In spite of this she did not abandon the hijab for a whole career.

She explains that she has received words of support from many people in connection with their appointment — however, sometimes colleagues did not immediately realize that she is the judge, taking it for the client or translator. “Still have the prejudice that high-level professionals does not look like me”, — quotes the edition of its word.

In his career, Arshad practiced law in a number of areas, many of which relate to the life of British Muslims: family law, forced marriages, crippling issues of female circumcision, as well as matters pertaining to Islamic law.

In 2019, the Iranian human rights activist Saba KORD Afshari was sentenced to 15 years in prison. One of her crimes acknowledged the protest against the compulsory wearing of the hijab in the country.
