“The appointment of Alexei Makeyev will create proper conditions for the work of the Ministry of foreign Affairs, pursuant to the requirements of the law of Ukraine “On sanctions”, and will also facilitate the coordination of Ukraine’s efforts with key countries and international institutions to increase pressure on the Russian Federation as the state aggressor in violation of international law and human rights”, — stated in the message.
Makeev was the Ambassador-at-large, and in 2014 he held the position of political Director of the foreign Ministry of Ukraine.
EU countries, USA and Ukraine first imposed economic sanctions against Moscow in 2014. It happened after the Crimea according to the results of the referendum became part of Russia. The annexation of the Peninsula was deemed illegal, but Moscow denies these charges. Then in 2015, the sanctions were imposed because of the conflict in the Donbass. In response, Moscow imposed a ban on food imports from countries that supported sanctions.
