Sargon, according to the official version, died in January 2016 in rest home near Moscow, but the circumstances of his death still has not been made public. Igor Sergun was 58 years old. He was the head of GRU from December 2011 until his death. A former adviser to the U.S. President for national security Michael Flynn claimed that the captain actually died in Lebanon, however, the defense Ministry denied this information.
The successor of Sarguna at the head of the GRU, Colonel-General Igor Korobov died in November 2018 after a long illness. The current head of the office is Admiral Igor Kostyukov.
