Scientists of the Cambridge and Greenwich revealed that the widespread use of masks is effective in combating the spread of coronavirus, holding it as an indicator of reproduction below one. This will prevent a second wave of the infection and defeat the pandemic, reported in an article published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A.
The researchers showed that only restrictive measures will not help curb the recurrence of coronavirus. However, even the homemade mask with reduced efficiency that can significantly reduce the rate of infection if they carry a sufficient number of people, regardless of symptoms. If wearing masks is combined with social distancing and certain restrictive measures, it will allow to cope with the pandemic and the consequent economic crisis long before the advent of vaccines.
The new coronavirus is transmitted by airborne droplets via aerosol viral particles of SARS-CoV-2 that stand out the infected people talking, coughing or sneezing.
One of the key indicators of the ability of the pathogen to cause an epidemic or pandemic is the basic reproduction rate (R0 or BDP), which is equal to the average number of persons infected carrier of the infection. For SARS-CoV-2 BDP is estimated to be from 2 to 6.47. To the pandemic has slowed, it is necessary that the figure was below one.
