British scientists have explained the phenomenon of “Saturn’s hexagon” long — lasting hurricane on the planet. The results of the study were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Scientists came to the conclusion that the mysterious phenomenon is due to the movement of anticyclones in the earth and heat transfer processes. The study says that convection occurs in the outer layers of the heavenly bodies, and the organized turbulence in the form of giant vortices forms a complex shaped atmospheric phenomenon. Appropriate conclusions were made after three-dimensional modeling of Saturn’s hexagon in the lab.
Specialists have been two hypotheses about the emergence of hexagonal hurricane. The first is that the storm is formed by fine particles raised in the air in the atmosphere is about 10 bar. According to the second, atmospheric phenomenon takes place due to the very low pressure and constant rotation of the planet around its axis.
The hexagon of Saturn was opened in the 1980-ies during the mission of the probe “Voyager 2”, due to lack of information, scientists could not estimate the true scale of the storm, deployed to thousands of kilometers. In 2004, the sixth planet from the Sun approached the device “Cassini”, which gave scientists high-quality images of the phenomenon.
