Montenegrin police opened a criminal case on the Montenegrin-littoral Metropolitanate, diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), and its Metropolitan Amphilochius of Radovic. They impute an inconsistent construction of the Church, according to RIA Novosti.
We are talking about the convent, existed before the status of the Church of St. Basil of Ostrog — one of the most revered ascetics in the Balkans. Recently, the municipal service under police guard destroyed the object with the excavator. The municipality said that the complex didn’t have the right documents for the construction of Konak — a residential facility at the monastery.
The demolition of the object caused resentment among believers and representatives of the Montenegrin opposition. Metropolitan Amphilochius called it “a crime against the Church and the people.” He said that from June 14 the Christians of the country will continue to carry out religious processions to protect the rights of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The Church of St. Basil of Ostrog was built in the XVIII century. May 9, 2020 it became a convent, then they built a Konak.
The legal status of the Montenegrin-coastal Metropolitan diocese in Montenegro is still not resolved. Because of this, between Church and state conflicts.
In December 2019, the Montenegro adopted the law “On freedom of conscience and religion and the legal status of religious communities”. According to him, the Serbian Orthodox Church may confiscate the property.
