Turkey has the right to change the status of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul and turn it into a mosque, without taking into account the views of other countries. This was stated by the foreign Minister of Turkey Mevlut Cavusoglu, the TV channel NTV.
“It is not an international issue. Hagia Sophia became the property of the Ottomans and was used as a mosque. It is a question of our sovereignty”, — said the Minister. He stressed that the agreement on introducing Cathedral in the world heritage list of UNESCO does not say anything about his status. According to Cavusoglu, Ankara needs to care about its preservation.
On 5 June the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan instructed his aides to conduct a study to prepare the Hagia Sophia to the official transformation into a mosque.
Saint Sophia Cathedral was erected by order of Emperor Justinian in the VI century of our era. After the Turks captured Constantinople, he was made a mosque but in 1935 the founder of the modern Turkish state Kemal Ataturk gave the Shrine the status of a Museum.
